The UNCF Northern Ohio Inter-Alumni Council with the support of the Cleveland Council of Black Colleges Alumni Association is proud to announce the Northern Ohio Scholars Program Scholarship. This scholarship opportunity, which is funded by the support of the area HBCU alums along with other local benefactors, is offered to current high school seniors, and HBCU-enrolled freshman, sophomores, juniors and seniors who are permanent residents of northern Ohio.

The Northern Ohio Scholars Program - Scholarship Guidelines

Scholarship Description:
  • (5) $2,000.00 – Currently enrolled undergraduate HBCU Student.
  • (5) $1,000.00 – Entering (1st time) College Freshman (Class of 2018 high school student).
Open Date:
  • 2/19/2018 12:00 AM EST
Close Date:
  • 4/27/2018 11:59 PM EST
Minimum GPA:
  • Cumulative 2.5 on a 4.0 scale.
Eligible Majors:
  • Open
Eligible Schools:
  • Any accredited public or private Historically Black College or University.
Residency Status:
  • U.S. Citizen, U.S. national or permanent resident in the State of Ohio (with Zip Code requirements)
Disbursement:
  • Fall 2018 Term/1st Semester and Spring 2019 Term/2nd Semester.
  • Check will be disbursed upon verification of enrollment and GPA for the commencing academic term.

Criteria:
To be eligible for this one-time award, a student must complete the application and submit (electronically in PDF form) verification of the following:
  1. Proof of Residency: Must be a citizen or permanent resident of the United States within Northern Ohio area. Eligible zip codes are posted on the home page of the online scholarship application. Proof may require a copy of state ID or driver’s license.
  2. Proof of Enrollment: UNCF will verify of your enrollment at said HBCU. 
  3. GPA Check: Cumulative GPA of a 2.5 minimum on a 4.0 scale. Follow directions provided by the portal with regards to submitting a transcript.
  4. Essay: 300-500 word essay on – “How an education from (name of HBCU) will support my overall life goals” or “The importance of supporting my community with an education from (name of HBCU)." Essay must be typed, Times New Roman or Arial style, font size 12, single spaced, and error free.
  5. ​Career Narrative: A paper outlining career aspirations, leadership experiences, and most significant achievements.
  6. Contact Information of a Recommenders: Please provide name, phone number and best email as these individuals will be contacted directly by UNCF.  Recommender should be a current professor or academic advisor (college students) or teacher, counselor, or principal (high school student).
Application Process:
  1. Submission: All eligible applicants must complete the application and submit all required documents through UNCF's secured online process..
  2. Recommender: This individual would need to submit their recommendation through the UNCF portal. You will be provided instructions upon completion of your application.
  3. Deadline: The online application, all requested information, official transcript (by mail) and response from recommenders must be received (DATE-TIME STAMPED) and/or postmarked by Friday, April 27, 2018 – 11:59pm eastern standard time.  Applicants are encouraged to apply early to ensure receipt of all documents by deadline. Incomplete applications and/or applications received after the deadline will not be accepted nor will students be notified.
  4. Award Announcement: To Be Determined
