This scholarship is named after Anthony H. Brown, an accomplished Cleveland area actor and musician who honed his skills at his alma mater, Bethune-Cookman University. His leadership and efforts, as Council President, has increased the awareness of HBCUs to the public, educators and elected officials in the community as well as encouraging fellow HBCU alumni to become active with their local and national alumni associations.
 
​This scholarship is intended for the purpose of providing financial benefit to a deserving Greater Cleveland, Ohio area (Cuyahoga County) student matriculating at any of our Federally-recognized HBCUs whose major is based in the Performance Arts or Communication, to include but not limited to:
  • Acting/Theatre
  • Creative Writing
  • Dance
  • Television/Radio Production
  • Mass Communications
  • Film/Screenwriting
  • Vocal/Instrumental Theory/Performance

The 2021 Anthony H. Brown HBCU Arts Scholarship Guidelines



Scholarship Description:
  • $2,000.00 – Currently enrolled undergraduate HBCU Student, to support tuition, room & board and other fees associated with a student account to be applied as those “last dollars” after all other financial aid has been applied.

Minimum GPA:
  • Cumulative 2.5 on a 4.0 scale.
Eligible Majors:
  • Performance Arts or Communication, to include but not limited to, Acting/Theatre, Creative Writing, Dance, Television/Radio Production, Mass Communications, Film/Screenwriting, Vocal/Instrumental Theory/Performance
Eligible Schools:
  • Any accredited public or private Historically Black College or University.
Disbursement:
  • Fall 2021 Term/1st Semester and Spring 2022 Term/2nd Semester.
  • Check will be disbursed upon verification of enrollment and GPA for the commencing academic term.

Criteria:
To be eligible for this one-time award, a student must complete the application and submit (electronically in PDF form) verification of the following:
  1. Proof of Residency: Must be a citizen or permanent resident of the United States within the Northeast Ohio area (Cuyahoga County residents only). Provide a copy of state ID or driver’s license)
  2. Proof of Enrollment: Verification of enrollment of an accredited HBCU that documents one of the qualifying majors. 
  3. GPA Check: Cumulative GPA of a 2.5 minimum on a 4.0 scale (upload unofficial transcript and mail official transcript).
  4. Essay: 300-500 word essay on “The importance of arts programming in schools." Essay must be typed, Times New Roman or Arial style, font size 12, single spaced, and error free.
  5. Activities & Accomplishments: A listing of student’s current activities, highlighting any accomplishments and awards. 
  6. Resume: Please submit a resume summarizing your experience in the field of study you wish to pursue, including years studied, repertoire, special programs, productions, exhibits and awards/honors received. Include brief descriptions of courses or workshops attended and describe any related experiences.
  7. Samples of Work: Submit one sample of authentic piece of work based on your major (see descriptions below). Must be solely authored, designed and/or performed by you (upload submissions). Any video clips submitted should be a relatively current (1 year or less) YouTube or related link. Any documents should be sent as a PDF with the watermark “FOR REVIEW” on every page embedded in document.
  8. Contact Information of Two Recommenders: Please provide name, phone number and best email as these individuals will be contacted directly by the Scholarship Committee. (1) A current professor or academic advisor. (1) Arts instructor who is familiar with your work.
  9. Professional Headshot Photo: Submit a high resolution recent head shot photo - Minimum dpi of 300 on a light, plain background, professional/business attire, only one person on the photo; no group photos, no selfies.
  10. ​Application Acknowledgement: Must sign the Acknowledge Page on the  application.
Application Process:
  1. Submission: All eligible applicants must complete the application and submit all required documents through our secured online process, unless directed otherwise. Information received in any other manner will be marked as incomplete. Once your application has been received, an email confirmation will be sent to acknowledge receipt of documents.
  2. Recommender: Upon receipt of application, the Scholarship Committee will send communication via email to your listed recommenders. Applicant may want to provide a courtesy call/reminder for individual to check their email (and junk/spam folder just in case) so that they can respond in a timely manner. Recommender will receive specific instructions to access the secured online application system to complete recommendation form and upload letter of recommendation. 
  3. Deadline: The online application, all requested information, official transcript (by mail) and response from recommenders must be received (DATE-TIME STAMPED) and/or postmarked by The stated deadline.  Applicants are encouraged to apply early to ensure receipt of all documents by deadline. Incomplete applications and/or applications received after the deadline will not be accepted nor will students be notified.
  4. Award Announcement: The selected recipient(s) will receive an acknowledgement letter.

Samples of Work
  • Acting/Theatre Arts: A video sample (3-5 minutes in length) of your performance or monologue in a play. If you are applying for a scholarship to study costume or set design, provide visual documentation of your work in .jpg format.
  • Creative Writing: A sample of 3 poems, a chapter of a book (8-10 pages) or short story written by you.
  • Dance: A video sample (3-5 minutes in length) of you performing.
  • Television/Radio Production: A video or audio sample (3-5 minutes in length) of a television, film or radio production that you have either performed in and/or produced.
  • Mass Communications: Since this area of work/major is broad, student will need to choose another category and submit that as a sample of work.
  • Screenwriting: A script (8-10 pages) written by you.
  • Vocal, Instrumental, Theory and/or Performance: A video sample (3-5 minutes in length) of you performing a piece of music.
