Joyce Terrell (1953-2012) lived a life that exemplified joyful giving, compassion and sensitivity to the needs of others. She delighted in blessing her children, grandchildren, family members, friends and anyone in need. Her joyful, giving spirit extended to all relationships developed in her lifetime. Joyce was a woman of exceptional strength, perseverance and integrity with a pleasant, up-beat personality. Her beautiful spirit and love for life was endearing to all who had the pleasure of knowing her.

Therefore, this scholarship on behalf of her children, Katina Dent Douglas and Travis Dent, alums of Central State University, embodies her love for giving and contributing to the success of others. May her legacy of joyful giving, integrity, strength and perseverance continue in the life of a deserving residing student, from the Northeast Ohio area, pursuing an education at Central State University, an HBCU and distinguished institution of higher learning.

The 2021 Joyce Robertson Terrell Memorial Scholarship Guidelines

Scholarship Description:
  • $1,000.00 awarded annually, with $500 available for 2 recipients. Must be a rising junior or senior at Central State University with a declared major in either Engineering or Education.
  • If only one eligible applicant, that applicant will receive the total $1000 award.
Open Date:
  • Monday, April 5, 2021 @ 4:00 PM EST
Close Date:
  • Friday, May 21, 2021 @ 11:59 PM EST
Minimum GPA:
  • No GPA required. However, must be in good academic standing with the university.
Eligible Majors:
  • Engineering or Education
Eligible Schools:
  • Central State University (Wilberforce, Ohio)
Ineligible Individuals:
  • Cleveland Council of Black Colleges Alumni Association Board of Directors, Scholarship Committee members and their families shall not be eligible during the term of office.
Disbursement:
  • Fall 2021 Term/1st Semester
  • Check will be disbursed upon verification of enrollment, proof of declared major and good academic standing for the commencing academic term.

Criteria:
To be eligible for this one-time award, a student must complete the application and submit (electronically in PDF form) verification of the following:
  1. Proof of Residency: Must be a citizen or permanent resident of the United States within the Northeast Ohio area. (Eligible counties of residence are Cuyahoga, Geauga, Lake, Lorain, Portage, and Summit. Provide a copy of state ID or driver’s license)
  2. GPA Check/Proof of Enrollment: No GPA required. However, must be in good academic standing with the university with verification of major major in Education or Engineering and classification of Junior or Senior status for Fall 2018. (upload unofficial transcript),
  3. Statement of Need: Minimum one page letter expressing your need of scholarship and how it my benefit your matriculation at Central State University. Letter must be typed, single spaced, and error free.
  4. Contact Information of One Recommender: Please provide name, phone number and best email as this individual will be contacted directly by the Scholarship Committee. (1) A current professor or academic advisor (college students).
  5. Application Acknowledgement:​ Must sign the Acknowledge Page on the  application.
Application Process:
  1. Submission: All eligible applicants must complete the application and submit all required documents through our secured online process, unless directed otherwise. Information received in any other manner will be marked as incomplete. Once your application has been received, an email confirmation will be sent to acknowledge receipt of documents.
  2. Recommender: Upon receipt of application, the Scholarship Committee will send communication via email to your listed recommenders. Applicant may want to provide a courtesy call/reminder for individual to check their email (and junk/spam folder just in case) so that they can respond in a timely manner. Recommender will receive specific instructions to access the secured online application system to complete recommendation form and upload letter of recommendation. 
  3. Deadline: The online application, all requested information, official transcript (by mail) and response from recommenders must be received (DATE-TIME STAMPED) and/or postmarked by Friday, May 21, 2021 – 11:59pm eastern standard time.  Applicants are encouraged to apply early to ensure receipt of all documents by deadline. Incomplete applications and/or applications received after the deadline will not be accepted nor will students be notified.
  4. Award Announcement: The selected recipient(s) will receive an acknowledgement letter, informing him/her of the scholarship award.
