Welcome to the Cleveland Branch NAACP's College Fair Workshop! Established in 1912, our branch has been dedicated to improving the political, educational, social, and economic status of minority groups. Our mission is to eliminate racial prejudice, raise awareness about the adverse effects of racial discrimination, and take lawful action to secure its elimination. Aligned with the national organization, we have consistently worked towards these goals in accordance with our Articles of Incorporation, Constitution, Bylaws, and the directives of the National Board of Directors. Over the years, the Cleveland Branch has actively supported the community through various programs and services, assisting those in need who have no other means of support. Today, we are excited to share information about opportunities for high school students to enhance their skills through the Afro-Academic, Cultural, Technological, and Scientific Olympics (ACT-SO). This year-long journey involves collaboration with community-based volunteers to develop projects and performances in diverse fields such as visual arts, business, performing arts, and culinary arts. The culmination of this experience is marked by local and national events where students compete for scholarships and other rewards. In this workshop, we aim to engage and inform high school students about scholarship and program opportunities that will nurture their creativity. We are actively seeking talented and driven students in grades 9th-12th to participate in this year's ACT-SO competition. The Fight Against Sextortion

This session will delve into the critical issue of sextortion awareness and prevention. Tamia and Timothy Woods, founders of the Do It for James Foundation, tragically lost their beloved son, James Timothy Woods, to cybercrime on November 19, 2022. James, an innocent 17-year-old high school student, fell victim to this modern menace that affects our youth. In response to their devastating loss, Tamia and Timothy established the foundation to educate parents and children about the dangers of sextortion. Throughout the year, the Do It for James Foundation has actively engaged in over 80 activities, including documentaries, news interviews, speaking engagements, and community events. Their efforts extend to creating a Sextortion Tip Card, sponsoring track and cross-country students, and organizing an annual walk/run day that awards over $10,500 in scholarships. Their overarching goal is to create a safer environment for our youth through increased awareness and education. In this workshop, Tamia and Timothy will share their personal journey, shedding light on sextortion, providing tools to identify and combat it, and addressing misconceptions surrounding this invisible threat. By the end of this session, participants will not only understand sextortion but will also be equipped with the knowledge and tools to protect themselves and others from its harmful effects. During this cookout, the alumni council acknowledged the selected 2019 scholarship recipients of the UNCF Northern Ohio Scholars Program and the Anthony H. Brown HBCU Arts Scholar. In addition to the scholarships, totaling $11,000, many of the registered students received a footlocker/trunk filled with toiletries and other dormitory room needs, care packages and a variety of gift cards.

Cleveland, OH – On what was a beautiful sunny Sunday afternoon (June 30, 2019) the Cleveland Council of Black Colleges Alumni Association along with the United Negro College Fund presented the 7th Annual FirstEnergy Destination HBCU: Student Send-off at the Cleveland Metroparks, South Chagrin Reservations – Shelterhouse. More than 150 students and parents along with alumni representing the various Historically Black Colleges and Universities were in attendance.
The send-off is designed for all Cleveland area college-bound freshmen students and upperclassmen returning to a Historically Black College or University in the fall of 2019. The send-off is the closing activity of the council’s annual commitment to providing wraparound educational support services to aid students to reach the “Destination HBCU” of their choice. Through this event and with the support of some generous partners and donors, the alumni group is able to continue to do the work in the name of their individual and collective institutions.
This year marked the first time involvement with the FirstEnergy Foundation as the title sponsor. Other first-time direct event sponsors included the Cleveland Cavaliers, Traveler’s Insurance, A. B.etter Way Foundation, Dominion Energy, and the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Returning partners were MetroHealth, Paramount Advantage, Caresource, Metro by T-Mobile, New Life Community Church of God, Dave’s Supermarkets, the National Pan-Hellenic Council of Greater Cleveland, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. The Cleveland Council of Black Colleges Alumni Association is partnering with the Black Methodists for Church Renewal to present the 2024 Future HBCU Scholars Workshop at Shaker Heights Library on Saturday, February 10th. The workshop event will provide an opportunity for local high school seniors, juniors, and parents who are interested in HBCUs, to receive guidance on FAFSA and financial aid, scholarship opportunities and practical tips on essay writing among other activities.
